"The newest project I have going is being done in tandem with the American Birding Association (ABA).  I will be doing two separate paintings of Atlantic Puffins.  One will be a vertical composition with two individual puffins, one of which has returned from sea with a mouth full of Herring.  The other will be a much larger horizontal composition with five plus individuals interacting on the rocks just after breeding season.  These paintings will be used for T-shirts, catalogs, brochures and tote bags for the 2006 National convention to be held in Bangor Maine June 19th-21st.

To get reference for these paintings I went to Jonesport Maine and took Captain John’s boat “The Chief” out to Machias Island last July of 2005.  Machias Island is a breeding ground for Atlantic Puffin, Razorbill Auk and Terns.  The Island is very carefully monitored and only a set number of people can visit at any one time.  I spent two days photographing and watching all these birds from one of the protective blinds put on the island."

Grevys Zebra Project

The Grevys Zebra is the largest wild horse on the planet. The sad fact is that its existing wild population is one of the smallest.  There are approximately 2500 wild Grevys in existence, the majority being in northern Kenya. This year 1 have been working with Grevys Conservation coordinator, Belinda Lowe of Lewa Downs Nature Conservancy to raise funds and public awareness for the endangered Grevys Zebra.  My part was to create a painting and three black and white drawings.

This July I flew to Lewa Downs in northern Kenya.  Lewa Downs is home for approximately 20 percent of the entire Grevys population. It is part of the Rangelands Trust, and works with local peoples to integrate wildlife conservation and local community -When I got to Lewa I was given a Masaii guide named Simberi and a land cruiser to get around the conservancy. I then spent 7 days watching Grevys, taking photos and doing field sketches. In August 1 flew back and began work on the painting, "Against the Clock". By the end of November, the painting and black and white drawings were completed. You may view these on the website.

Artist proof edition of 150 Giclee prints are available of "Against the Clock". They are 22” X 48” with a depth of 2” on the sides which wrap around stretched canvas frame.  To purchase a Giclee canvas print of "Against the Clock"  contact Kim Diment.  An edition of 150 Paper Prints wiII also be available through Lewa Downs.  To find out more about the Grevy Zebra and the very impressive Lewa Wildlife Conservancy go to www.lewa.org.
