This painting was inspired by a Woodcock banding spring of 2018. I was amazed with the camouflage mother and babies use when they freeze into their surroundings. Woodcocks have always marked the beginning of spring for me. Their elaborate mating ritual is often heard and not seen! The babies hatch out late May and early June. They are precocial birds and are soon up and running after their mothers. When born, the babies’ feet are almost the same size as their parents.
